The longevity of a car wrap depends, initially, on a few factors:
The skill with which the wrap was installed in the first place.
The quality of the vinyl which was used.
The conditions the vehicle is exposed to regularly.
How well you maintain your wrap.
You can't do much about the conditions your car wrap is exposed to. Houston can be harsh. It's a high-heat, high-humidity, high-pollution environment. Plus, we get severe weather on the regular. All of that can mean your car wrap takes a beating. At least it's protecting your paint job!
Maintenance, now…that's completely within your control. Here are a few tips for helping your car wrap last as long as possible.
#1) Regular Cleaning
You still have to wash your car, even after getting a car wrap. We don't recommend going through big, automated washes.
Instead, we recommend cleaning your car with mild soap, water, and very soft towels. You want to avoid using anything abrasive. Abrasive materials and harsh chemicals can damage the vinyl. Microfiber towels are your best bet. They're gentle, absorbent, and quite effective at removing dirt. You could also use soft cotton cloths, or chamois.
Plan on cleaning your car at least once or twice a month. You might need to give it more attention during pollen season or bug season.
P.S.: avoid waxing your car. Wrapped vehicles don't need wax. Instead, you want to use a vinyl protectant to help maintain the vinyl's appearance. Popular brands include 303 Aerospace Protectant, Meguiar's Ultimate Protectant, and Chemical Guys VRP Vinyl, Rubber, and Plastic Super Shine Dressing.
#2) Hug the Shade
Houston is hot. You can't do much about that. You can avoid leaving your wrapped vehicle to sit in the harshest heat for long periods.
Park in garages or shaded spots whenever you can. Shade can be ten to twenty degrees cooler than unshaded spots.
Remember, extreme temperature fluctuations cause your vinyl to expand or contract, which in turn could lead to warping and peeling. Protect your car from the sun wherever possible.
